The session was a Q&A with ARPA-E's Mark Hartney and Karma Sawyer.
There has been discussion of carbon sequestration, renewables, and the transition from legacy energy sources.
Some notes...
How will natural gas effect the value proposition for renewables?
There's no reason to think that natural gas won't play a significant role in the energy mix in the near future. Natural gas use has been increasing, making a dent in carbon emissions of coal, and helping create a window for development of renewables.
It's going to be necessary to consider how natural gas's use as a transportation fuel will effect its use in stationary power.
For a completely sustainable and low carbon energy portfolio, there's going to have to be a lot of emphasis on storage. Getting renewables to cost parity without subsidies will also play a big role.
Solar: sitings and grid connections are the big challenges, state energy quotas are driving implementation; pace of implementation is limited by non-technical issues as much as technical.
